Candidates must possess a bachelor's degree in civil engineering and ideally have ten years or more of experience in transportation, roadway and MDOT related design projects (five years minimum). Knowledge of MDOT standards and practices including a thorough understanding of MDOT plan preparation and review process, preparing MDOT cost estimates, schedules and budgets is a must. A Professional Engineering License in Michigan or ability to obtain one within six months is required. Candidates must have experience with and/or managing the design using GEOPAK Design Software and basic knowledge and use of the MicroStation CADD Software. Working knowledge of local, state and federal transportation standards and procedures and ability to oversee, mentor and supervise junior engineering staff is also required. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential to this position. Typical responsibilities include:

  • Deputy Project Management and oversight of roadway and transportation related projects and technical tasks
    • Monitor task budget and progress
    • Prepare project status and other reports
    • Communicate project details with other design engineers
  • Design of various transportation projects including roadways, bridge approaches, traffic control plans, etc.
    • Prepare and review scope, budget and schedule for project tasks
    • Prepare roadway plans, technical specifications, and cost estimates
    • Develop and complete applications, permits, and engineering reports
    • Conduct on-site inspections as needed
    • Roadway corridor modeling
  • Oversight of Junior design staff including mentoring staff and leading technical tasks/teams
  • Attend and/or conduct client and project meetings
    • Interface with clients at various design and review meetings (pre-design, plan review, pre-construction, professional organization, etc.)
  • Attend seminars and/or training classes
  • Assist with proposals, marketing, project reports and technical presentations
  • Maintain excellent client relations
  • Maintain a safe working environment
